Boyfri.....Fiance.

I have been engaged for 46 days and I am still getting the hang of this whole "fiance" thing. Maybe he is having an easier time with it than me. I am not sure.

Today in my Food and Society class, I actually said "fiance" instead of "boyfriend" and I about freaked out. No studder, no stammer, no hesitation. It was said.

People laughed, actually. It may have been the content of my comment, but it may have been the term I used to describe him.

We were discussing whether food preparation changed from dating to marriage. I, of course, had to give my two cents. People were giving really funny answers (not haha funny but funny in the sense of what they were saying.)

"I have been dating my boyfriend for just about a year, so I know everything about him."

"She and I have been together for about 6 months now, which is a long time. I know what she likes to eat and if she doesn't like something, she has the nerve to tell me."

Bahahahaha. I would have told Kody on day 1 if I hated something he made for me. Straight up. I didn't care about getting the nerve to speak my mind.

Mine went something like this:

"I have been dating my fiance for about two and a half years now and it isn't me trying to figure out what he likes anymore. It is more of 'did he even eat today?' He has a habit of either forgetting to eat or just not eating. Sometimes he comes over to my apartment and I notice he is withering away, so I will ask him the last time he ate. If it was a long time ago, I find something basic (because that is pretty much all he eats) and feed him. Earlier in the relationship you have to worry about what they like, but later on, you worry for them instead."

People wouldn't stop staring at me after that statement. Is it because I am talking about something more adult? Is it because I am engaged? I have no idea. I never fail to bring attention to myself.

Seriously?

In my English class this semester, I am working with a high school student I was randomly paired with to help him become a better writer. I am the ONLY person in my class of over 20 who has had no response from my student. I try everything I can and he still doesn't write anything. It is truly frustrating to me because I can't do everything I need to do in this class. I so behind on learning and work compared to the rest of the class.

This professor is punishing me for not being able to get my student to write. I have met him once in person and the rest of the contact has been online. He can (and has) choose to ignore me. So what do I do? I am doing the best I can. I couldn't do today's assignment and my professor acted like I am some irresponsible student. I am doing the best I can. I am not slacking at all. I am checking to see if my student responded to me, I am doing the parts of the assignments I can do, and I am being punished.

I practically was yelled at in front of class today for not having my assignment (to grade his assignment) done. The professor knew I did everything I could. He know I was doing the best I could with what I had. Yet, he still gets mad at me. I can't win with him. I love the premise of this class but I am about one more class period of hell from dropping it.

Stress Relief

Tonight was super stressful. I spent WAY too long trying to solve a single problem for Labor Economics due tomorrow to no avail. I think I will just take the failing grade on it and move on.

I decided to eat a ton of chocolate (not literally, more like 5 Hershey's kisses) and play Words with Friends. I really wish I didn't have to take an upper level econ class for my Marketing major. I mean, I enjoy the class but I can't figure out the homework for the life of me.

Angry Eryn doesn't need to exist anymore so she is going to stay as far away from Econ until 8am tomorrow when class starts.

Tuition Headaches

Since I am already in the complaining mood from last night and earlier today, I am going to continue it with an email we received from the president of Drake, stating tuition is going up next year. Lovely.

Again? Why didn't I choose a school with tuition lock where every year was the same? My scholarships don't go up, but my tuition does? Not fair. I mean seriously, they should make the scholarships inflate just like the tuition, at the very least.

Actually, why not just not increase tuition? I love how the email said Drake does its best to keep the costs low. Low compared to what? Compared to the 13 other similar Midwest colleges. Wow. What would really make Drake stand out is tuition lock...just sayin'.

I have a feeling most of what is in that letter is BS to keep us quiet. I think there is no need to increase tuition, room, board, activities fees, and the like as much as they will. I didn't see a 3 - 5% inflation anywhere else in my life in the past year (with the exception of my beloved peanut butter, but those circumstances were different). Especially in incomes. I am thinking college is becoming only for the wealthy. This will only make the rich richer and the poor poorer. But you don't need to hear me rant about social classes. Maybe another post.

It isn't too exciting but you can read it here: http://www.drake.edu/students/tuitionletter2012_students.pdf

Another Boring Blog about College

Today was the second day back at Drake and the first day I have now experienced each of my classes. This is going to be the most odd of my semesters at Drake thus far.

Monday:
Theory of English and Practice: An English class with tons of work and a cooky professor. We team up with assigned students from a local high school and teach them AP English, grade their work, and learn from them. I am going to love this class.

Food and Society - a sociology class with only 100 points for a grade that deals with food in our society. It is mostly writing and reading, but I know I am going to like this.

Tuesday:

Labor Economics: an 8am snoozer that I need to take for my marketing major. I don't think this will be too difficult but it won't be exciting, either.

Consumer Behavior: A marketing class that is half psychology and half marketing. I couldn't wait to take this class and I am stoked about it.

Information Systems and E-Commerce: Again, another marketing major requirement. Boring class at the end of the day whereby I will be pinning many wedding ideas on my Pinterest account.

I only have five classes, each twice a week. This shouldn't be too bad of a semester for me. I think I am going to make it through yet another semester at Drake. After this, I only have two more to go! I can't believe it.

Revelations

4.0. That is just a number. It is the only number I have known thus far at Drake. I think I need to come to the realization that it is no longer going to be my number.

This semester I began my upper-level classes and it is hitting me hard. Typically I have one class that is borderline A-B but I pull it off in the end. This semester, I have three classes where I am borderline at the moment. I am not sure I can pull this one off.

I think I need to grow up and understand that there is so much more to college than working my butt off and getting that perfect grade. I think my job, friendships, experience, and community efforts are much more important than a perfect GPA.

Now, if I can hold to this revelation by the time I get my final grades, I will be great. Otherwise, I think I am going to have a breakdown when I realize I will no longer be a "perfect" student.

My Life Sans School

If I took school out of the picture right now, I would have no life. Therefore, I am going to write a little about two of my classes.

These are fragmented thoughts I often have in these classes.

Structures of Modern American English

  • Am I the only non-education major in this class?
  • Diagramming sentences is fun, but really difficult
  • I think I am the only person taking this class by choice, as I can tell by the lack of enthusiasm in the classroom

Web Programming
  • Guys in the front - SHUT UP. I am so sick of hearing your incorrect comments. If your comments actually added to the class, I wouldn't mind, but they DON'T.
  • I am a sloppy HTML writer and therefore got a 28 out of 30 on my first assignment. Fail.
  • I like to doodle and listen to people pronounce hexadecimal incorrectly.
