I came into work today to find out one of my close coworkers was terminated. She and I were both interns until she moved up to a full-time position.

We have all heard of people losing their jobs because of the recent poor economy. It is no wonder terms like "downsizing" and "layoff" are now household terms. It scares me to think this could be me one day.
"The department was making cuts and decided they no longer needed that position," I was told. That is not reassuring to me. AT ALL. I am a lowly intern, not the full-time worker she is was. I feel like I was needed even less than she was.
"I just wanted to let you know that you don't have to worry about your position. You are perfectly fine where you are. You aren't going anywhere," I was reassured. I hope this is the truth. I love my job here and I would hate to leave.
I need to come to appreciate the fact that I have a job. I want to stay an intern forever. I think I have more job security that way.
