I understand that I am an intern. I also understand that interns are not usually held to high standards in the workplace. However, that doesn't mean an intern should spend all day on Facebook, or looking up Canon cameras and a new Macbook, or texting their friends. Sure, I understand laid back workplaces - I currently work at two of them.
However, as an intern, I make sure I work. I now understand why interns get such a bad rep all the time. Honestly, most deserve it. If you run out of work, ask for more. If something is challenging, ask for help. If you need a mental break, check email. Seriously, it bothers me how much money companies waste on interns each year. It is no wonder so many positions force the intern to make copies and get coffee all the time - that is all they prove they know how to do.
Sure, I have had times where I slack off and text someone or I get on a social network. However, I don't let that interfere with my productivity. I just witnessed 3 HOURS of an intern accomplishing something it should take about 10 minutes to do because she searched the internet the rest of the time.
Lord, please don't let me become that intern who surfs the internet all day at work. I want to prove to those I work for (and with) that I am a hard worker, and I am not going to play around just because I am not micromanaged. I hope one day this translates into something great for me, because I actually want to work. That is what I am being paid for.
